The South Fork of the King's River ran parallel to the King's River Scenic Byway, crossing beneath it as I approached the Kanawyers Loop. Along the way, numerous warning signs made it clear: the river was dangerously swollen, its force a direct result of the massive snowmelt from the previous winter. My dog, Hallie, and I took the warnings seriously—there would have been no second chances near those raging waters.
