King's Canyon National Park

Kings Canyon National Park is located in the southern part of the Sierra Nevada, along its western slope. This rugged, glacier-carved valley plunges more than a mile deep, surrounded by towering peaks that reach over 14,000 feet. Swift-flowing rivers carve through the landscape, and the park is home to some of the world’s largest giant sequoia trees. Among them stands the General Grant Tree, which, by trunk volume, ranks as the second largest tree in the world.

It was an entire day dedicated to descending into the valley and traveling the full 31-mile length of the King’s Canyon Scenic Byway, from the park entrance to the end at Kanawyers Loop, and back. Along the way, numerous stops were made to take in the breathtaking beauty of the area. The highlight of the day came as we ascended out of the valley, treated to a mesmerizing sunset that bathed the distant mountain ranges in a warm glow.
