In this age of technical marvels, it’s become incredibly easy to carry a camera with you everywhere you go, and more than likely, it’s built right into your expensive and technologically advanced smartphone. But when this series was started, technology wasn’t as advanced, megapixel counts were lower, and overall image quality left much to be desired. Still, I always felt comforted knowing I had some kind of camera nearby. So when a photo opportunity came along and my Nikon was, unfortunately, tucked away at home in its bed, I could still capture the moment.

For years, I blindly saved nearly every photo I took with my earlier cell phones, always wondering what purpose they could possibly serve. The quality wasn’t what I was used to, nor what I expected as a foundation for fine art. Then one day, I decided to experiment by spontaneously editing a handful with digital software. To my surprise, the results immediately revealed a new sense of direction. What began as an afterthought quickly became a quest: to create simple art captured in an unexpected way. Images that could stand on their own, earning merit with others in the future… just as they already do for me.

Thru the Cellular Eye marks the first of two series’ initially captured with a cell phone camera that I’ve added to my collection.
